Ashburton

Learning Village

In April 2006 Croydon Music Service moved to the £25million flagship Ashburton Learning Village.  The building includes Ashburton Community School, Ashburton Library and Croydon's adult education service as well as Croydon Music Service.  With much emphasis placed on the need for environmental efficiency its features include:

·       the largest solar panels in a building in the UK;

·       a rain water tank to feed toilets and service sinks;

·       movement-sensitive automatic lights;

·       sun tubes for rooms without windows – polished chrome cylinders fitted in the ceiling which protrude from the roof and, with the help of micro prism glass, magnify the light coming into the room and reduce the need for electric light;

·       floor-to-ceiling windows and sky lights in the library, which again reduce the need for electric lights;

·       a brise soleil – a permanent blind that stops glare from the sun but allows maximum daylight into rooms which has been installed on the outside of the library windows.

In addition to our administrative offices, music library and instrument stores, Ashburton Learning Village will be the home for most of our out of school groups. On Tuesday evenings, Friday evenings and Saturdays hundreds of young musicians come to Ashburton to develop their instrumental and musical skills and to rehearse and perform in a stunning hall with lighting rig, sound equipment and control room.

Ashburton Library is the perfect place for students who arrive early for an evening activity to get on with some homework or for parents and carers to wait while their children are enjoying taking part in Music Service activities at Ashburton.

Situated in Shirley Road, Croydon, Ashburton Learning Village is well served by a number of buses and the tram stops of Blackhorse Lane and Woodside are close by.
