Progress and further opportunities
Applying for lessons and further information |
Awards Croydon Music Service receives public funding to support the music education of pupils in Croydon Local Authority maintained schools. Some of this money supports the administration and management of the service. Some is used to subsidise tuition charges.
All charges for tuition for pupils in Croydon maintained schools are subsidised, and there is an additional 80% discount for pupils eligible for Free School Meals. Additional support is also available from time to time for special projects, such as free instrument hire for ‘endangered species’ instruments where the pupil belongs to the Centre for Endangered Species or an ensemble.
Merit Award One important area of support is our Merit Award scheme for individual tuition for pupils playing at or above Grade 5 standard who show commitment to their instrumental/vocal lessons. They are available on teacher recommendation for pupils who have passed Grade 4 or Platinum Music Medal (CMS will need to see a copy of the certificate). For pupils who have not taken either of these exams, an audition will be necessary, and pupils should prepare a Grade 5 level piece and some Grade 5 level scales. As pupils progress further longer Merit Award lessons are available, including 60 minute individual Merit Award Scholarship lessons, for talented and highly committed pupils. For pianists, these lessons are offered at the Centre for Young Pianists.
The
Grinstead Scholarship offers help for Merit Award pupils who are
also members of a Croydon Music Service centre or ensemble where
financial circumstances make the cost of the individual tuition and
centre membership difficult for the parent / carer to find. |
