In the Instrumental Workshops at Croydon Young Musicians (CYM) young musicians spend most of their time with others of the same instrument family. When players reach about Grade 2 standard (Silver Music Medal) they can transfer to the String Orchestra or Concert Band. They will still receive specialist help with the skills needed for making progress on their particular instrument, but they are also able to enjoy much more time devoted to playing in a larger mixed instrument ensemble. The two groups are at the same time so that occasionally the musicians can combine in other ways to form a group with strings, wind and percussion.
The Vocal Workshop is for all those in instrumental workshops at CYM. The voice is used as the basis for developing musical skills and a deeper understanding and enjoyment of music.
Once players have gone beyond Grade 4 (Platinum Music Medal) they may audition for the Centre for Wind and Percussion or the Orchestral Centre. The activities at CYM also include the Creative Workshop and the specialist Theory / Musicianship Class and it is also the one of the venues for the Endangered Species Centre. |
