The String Orchestra and Concert Band are the second level of activities at Croydon Young Musicians, for players of around Grade 2 standard (Silver Music Medal) up to Grade 5. The String Orchestra is for violin, viola, cello and bass players, the Concert Band for woodwind, brass and percussion players. The two groups are at the same time (10.15am to 12.15pm) so that occasionally the musicians can combine to form other groups with strings, wind and percussion. The sessions will normally start with a choice of activities to develop musical skills. Younger students who enjoy singing may opt for membership of the vocal workshop and Voice Works choir. The Practical Musicianship develops musical skills which are often required for instrumental examinations and also provides a grounding in music theory as preparation for the Grade 5 Theory course. Other musical skills projects for more advanced players may include topics such as jazz improvisation or folk music. Students will be consulted so that projects are related to their interests.
The rest of the session will include specialist sectional coaching to develop playing technique, listening skills and sensitivity to others as well as playing in the full band or orchestra. Regular performances take place during the year, mostly at Oasis Academy: Shirley Park, but also at the Fairfield Halls and other venues in Croydon and further afield.
Once players have gone beyond Grade 4 (Platinum Music Medal) they may audition for the Centre for Wind and Percussion or the Orchestral Centre. |
