Frequently Asked Questions

What are the benefits from learning a musical instrument?

By playing a musical instrument pupils develop:

  • an enjoyment, love and understanding of music
  • a sense of co-operation, team-work and responsibility
  • a sense of discipline and initiative
  • dexterity and co-ordination
  • self-confidence, self-respect and self-expression
  • concentration and powers of memorising

Which instrument should my child learn?

Wherever possible a child should be encouraged to make his/her own choice although parents will want to take into consideration other aspects including the cost.  Croydon Music and Arts organises instrumental teaching in most Croydon local authority schools: teaching is offered on all orchestral instruments, recorder, guitar, piano, keyboard, drum kit and voice.  Parents should approach the Headteacher if they would like their child to have lessons.

Should I purchase or hire an instrument?

ALWAYS take the advice of a teacher before purchasing or hiring an instrument. With more expensive instruments it is often sensible to hire for a few months before deciding to buy - the hire charge can often be put towards buying the instrument.

What can parents do to help?

  • Try to get your child to make a commitment in time (say one year) to instrument studies.
  • Offer compliments and give encouragement as often as possible.
  • Listen to your child’s practice and acknowledge improvement.
  • Encourage your child to talk about the lessons.
  • Encourage your child to listen to a wide variety of music.
  • Ensure the instrument is in good working order.
  • Encourage your child to join bands, orchestras etc. when they are proficient enough.
Keep in contact with the instrument teacher via the practice chart or practice book.

  • What should I do if my child appears to be losing interest?

    • Don’t panic.
    • Discuss with your child - why is their interest declining?
    • Contact the instrumental teacher.
    • Offer your increased enthusiasm and support.

    Can success be guaranteed?

No, but the three components which will help your child to achieve success are:

    • Commitment - from pupils and parents.
    • Motivation - an endless list of activities is vital to provide excitement, interest and incentive for your child to continue studies.
    • Parental Support - encouragement and support is essential if your child is to progress.

What are the DOs and DON'Ts?

    Do:

    • Provide a quiet place away from distractions.
    • Schedule a regular time.
Check on the practice chart or in the practice book
    • what has to be worked at.
    • Give constant praise and encouragement for effort and improvement.

    Don't:

    • Use practice as a punishment.

    • Expect rapid progress in the early stages.

    • Ridicule or make fun of mistakes or less than perfect playing.
