The Keyboard Workshop is for a young keyboard player who has had a term or two of lessons up to about Grade 2 or Silver Music Medal standard. It is designed to complement the tuition pupils have in their instrumental lessons. It aims to motivate young keyboard players in the early stages of learning and, under the guidance of specialist experienced tutors, to develop and reinforce the good playing habits which are essential for making further progress. Workshop members study a wide range of music, in unison and in parts, and activities cover the musical skills needed for playing in more advanced groups. Joining the workshop is the first step to achievement in, and a lasting enjoyment of, playing the keyboard.
At around Grade 3, or Gold Music Medal standard, pupils will be advised that they are ready to move to the Keyboard Ensemble for intermediate and advanced pupils. There they still receive specialist help with the skills needed for making progress on the keyboard, and are able to develop ensemble playing to a high level. The Centre meets at the same time as the Centre for Young Guitarists and the Centre for Wind and Percussion which enables keyboard players to have the opportunity to rehearse and perform with other instruments occasionally. |
