Merit Awards

Croydon Music and Arts receives public funding to support the music education of pupils in Croydon Local Authority maintained schools. Some of this money supports the administration and management of the service.  Some is used to subsidise tuition charges.

An important area of support is our Merit Award scheme offering individual lessons for talented pupils who show commitment to their instrumental / vocal lessons.

·       20 or 30 minute Merit Award lesson for pupils who are members of one of our Music Centres

·       30 minute Merit Award lesson for pupils who are playing at Grade 5 standard

·       45 or 60 minute Merit Award lesson for more advanced pupils

A 30 minute Merit Award lesson is available on teacher recommendation for pupils who have passed Grade 4 or Platinum Music Medal.  In all other cases an informal audition will be arranged.

Merit Award lessons for pianists are offered at the Centre for Young Pianists.

The Grinstead Scholarship offers help for Merit Award pupils who are also members of a Croydon Music and Arts centre or ensemble.  These are funded by the Dorothy Grinstead Memorial Fund and are for cases where financial circumstances make the cost of the individual tuition and centre membership difficult for the parent / carer to find.
