Tuition Options

The added enjoyment of learning with others, with opportunities for playing together, makes group tuition a more effective option for the early stages of learning.  As pupils progress, more individual attention is required.  Paired then individual lessons are desirable for intermediate and advanced levels.  CMS offers three types of tuition to take pupils from beginner to advanced levels.

·         Group Lesson, 3 or 4 for 30 minutes (or 2 for 20 minutes if no suitable group of 3 or 4)

·         Paired Lesson, 2 for 30 minutes (or individual 20 minute lesson if no suitable pair)

·         Individual Lesson, 30 minutes (for pupils playing at, or above, Grade 5 standard)

The alternative 20 minute lesson option will be used where the group or paired lesson is not possible, for example

·         groups of 3 or 4 are less suitable for piano or drum kit tuition where it is not possible for each child to have their own instrument during the lesson

·         the teaching room may not be large enough to accommodate a group lesson

·         group or paired lessons become less effective when pupils are working at different levels

Instrumental / vocal teachers will arrange the grouping of pupils in consultation with schools.  Parents / carers will be advised when a change of option is recommended.  For example, when one pupil leaves a group of 2, it may be necessary for the remaining pupil to move to an individual 20 minute lesson.

Lessons usually take place in school, during the school day.  Instrumental / vocal teachers will arrange the lesson times in consultation with the school.  Where there is less than an hour's teaching in a school, lessons may not be possible, or may need to be rearranged at another venue as it is not efficient for teachers to visit for less than an hour.

The exceptions are the Centre for Asian Music (for Indian harmonium and tabla), the Centre for Endangered Species (for beginner oboe, bassoon, French horn and double bass) and the Centre for Young Pianists (for talented pianists) where lessons are available out of school time.
