Saturdays 9.00am - 1.00pm

Oasis Academy, Shirley Park

The Croydon Centre for Young Pianists (CCYP) was founded in 1974 by the Croydon Education Committee to provide tuition to talented pianists of school age and meets on  Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays at Oasis Academy, Shirley Park during term time.

The CCYP has maintained such a high standard of performance over the years that it is now accepted as a centre of excellence.  Students perform a wide-ranging repertoire which includes, not only piano solos but also duets, trios, works for two pianos, chamber music and piano concertos. Masterclasses are held annually at Fairfield with such eminent pianists as Howard Shelley, John Lill, Piers Lane, Lilian Kallir, Christian Blackshaw, Michael Roll, Cecile Ousset, Cristina Ortiz, Leon McCawley, Susan Tomes, Angela Hewitt, Hamish Milne, Stephen Osborne, Murray McLachlan and acclaimed songwriter (and former student) Wayne Wilkins. Students from the Centre have also taken part in a masterclass at the Wigmore Hall with Yonty Solomon and as a new venture, in 1998 participated in a recording session at Fairfield with Andrew Keener, which resulted in their first CD.  One of the highlights of the Centre’s concert programme, is the annual invitation to take part in the Lunchtime Concert Series held at the Fairfield Concert Hall, Croydon.

Since 1991, the CCYP has enjoyed successful tours abroad to Arnhem, the German Rhineland, Czech Republic, Hungary, Austria, Finland, Poland, Ukraine, Greece and Norway in April 2008.  Highlights have been the masterclasses and concerts given at the Liszt Academy in Budapest and the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki. These tours have enabled the students from the CCYP to successfully act as ambassadors for British youth and music.

Many students go on to make music their career and there have been numerous successes in competitions, festivals and examinations.
