Applying for lessons and further information

Music plays an important part in all our lives and instrumental / vocal lessons can be one of the most exciting and enjoyable parts of school life, with opportunities for pupils to explore and perform music from different times and places, and to create new music of their own! In addition lessons develop improved concentration and social and team working skills which benefit other areas of the curriculum.  Croydon Music Service, through its team of expert teachers, is delighted to be able to offer many musical opportunities for young people in Croydon schools.

The tuition options available range from group tuition in the early stages of learning to paired then individual lessons for intermediate and advanced levels.  Beginner lessons normally take place in school, the exceptions being our specialist Centres for Asian Music and Endangered Species.

Tuition is available on a large range of instruments.  A number of factors need to be taken into account when choosing which instrument to learn.  These include age of child, which instruments are taught at school, the possibility of hiring a CMS instrument, further opportunities available, and, most important, which instruments appeal most to the child.

Success in lessons depends on a commitment from the pupil and close cooperation between the parent / carer and teacher.  To support progress practice charts are issued free, and a practice booklet for more advanced pupils may be purchased.  An annual report is issued for all pupils.  There will be further opportunities to join groups at school or CMS Ensembles.

Awards for specialist tuition are available for advanced students, including help through the Grinstead Scholarship.  Talented pianists may apply to join the Centre for Young Pianists.

Different fees are charged depending on the type of tuition.  Pupils in Croydon Local Authority maintained schools eligible for Free School Meals receive an 80% reduction.

The final stage is to make a choice and to begin the process of applying for lessons.  While pupils are having lessons parents/carers need to know where to find answers to queries and further information.
