Wind and Percussion Centre Head of Centre: David Rompani
Tuesdays 4.45pm – 8.00pm
4.45pm – 6.15pm Clarinet Choir, Fluteharmonic, Brass Ensemble 5.30pm – 8.00pm Croydon Youth Winds
The Centre is for wind and percussion players from about Grade 5 up to music college entrance. It is based on a wind band for the senior players and additional ensembles for intermediate players. Croydon Youth Winds will study and perform pieces ranging from established American and English wind band repertoire to contemporary film music and music from musicals. Some time is spent split into other groups to enable students to experience a range of musical styles and periods for their instrument, such as music for stage band or percussion, including joint activities with the other ensembles. For example, flute players in Croydon Youth Winds will spend some time rehearsing with Fluteharmonic between 5.30pm and 6.15pm and may attend from 4.45pm if they wish.
There are also opportunities for students to play specialist instruments like the piccolo, alto and bass flute, cor anglais, Eb, alto, bass and contra-bass clarinets, baritone saxophone, contra-bassoon and a large variety of tuned and untuned percussion. The Centre has some instruments that are available for loan to members. In recent years ensembles have toured South Africa, France, Spain and Italy. Many of the senior players will have the opportunity to belong to the Orchestral Centre which meets on a Friday evening. |
